Section 80C Demystified: Where Does ELSS Fit In?

Section 80C allows individuals to claim a deduction on specified investments and expenses, up to the applicable annual limit. Common instruments under this section include Public Provident Fund (PPF), Employee Provident Fund (EPF), five-year tax-saving fixed deposits, life insurance premiums, and ELSS mutual funds, among others.

Each option differs meaningfully in lock-in period, expected return profile, and risk. PPF and EPF are backed by fixed, government-declared rates with long lock-ins. Tax-saving fixed deposits offer fixed returns with a five-year lock-in. ELSS, by contrast, is market-linked with a comparatively short lock-in.

Rather than picking one option exclusively, many investors split their 80C allocation across a few instruments, balancing the stability of fixed-income options with the growth potential of ELSS.

The right mix depends on your existing portfolio, risk appetite, and how much of your overall wealth is already market-linked.
